The menopause usually happens when women are between 45 and 55, though it can sometimes happen earlier. It denotes the point in time that a woman stops having periods.
The run-up to the menopause is called the perimenopause, and this can last up to 10 years. Many early menopause symptoms can be caused by the perimenopause, including sleep disturbance, hot flashes/flushes, headaches, depression, anxiety, joint pain, vaginal dryness/pain and difficulty concentrating.
The perimenopause can also cause changes in body shape as weight shifts to the stomach, thighs and hips.
If you are experiencing these or any other menopausal symptoms, it can be helpful to know if you have entered the perimenopause stage, as this may be one way to rule out other causes for these symptoms.
You may also wish to speak to your GP about treatment options if your test shows that your FSH levels are elevated (an indicator of the perimenopause).
Specimen collection and preparation
Please note: your urine specimen must be collected in a clean and dry container to avoid interfering with the test results.
If possible, use a first morning urine specimen as it generally contains the highest concentration of follicle stimulating hormone FSH. If this is not possible, urine specimens collected at any time of the day may be used for this at-home menopause test.
How to test
- Based on the above information, identify the day to begin testing.
- Make sure the pouch is at room temperature before opening. Once you have decided to take the test, remove it from the sealed pouch and use it within one hour.
- Remove the cap of the test and place the absorbent tip in the urine stream or place the absorbent tip into the urine sample (please remember to use a clean cup) for at least 15 seconds.
- Replace the cap back on the test, then lay down the product on a clean, level surface with the test and control window facing upwards. Start the timer.
- As the test begins to develop, you may notice a light-coloured flow moving across the test and control window. Read the result at 3 minutes. Do not interpret the result after 10 minutes.
